So Where's Your Family?

This San Rafael PoS was built in 1951. It comes in at 941 sq ft, 2 br 1 ba, zero "life-style" upgrades but lots of good old fashioned vinyl and linoleum. What made me laugh (as usual) is the realtor's write-up: "basement could be family room, also under the house storage". Well good thinkin' Mr. Realtor! So does that mean [turns on real estate agent universal translator] that the basement could be converted into either a family room (there's no family room?!) or be used as storage, but not both? Besides, who wants to put their family room in the basement anyway? "Knock, knock. Hi Neighbor Joe. Hi, so where's the family. Oh, they are all in the basement err I mean 'family room'." All this Marin goodness for $675,000. Ah, the sacrifices one must make to live in Marin.

"Family room in basement" is a very midwest thing. "Tornado shelter" is another midwest usage, but whatever you call it, entertaining family or friends below ground isn't much fun.

The writeup also notes "Serene and peaceful yard in wooded setting." However, one could just as easily say "50 year-old house with run down yard and cinder block patio" Surprisingly, it's not too different from those cramped cabins dotting the stick towns of south-central US. Except: those things sell for under $50K.

Thanks for that. Shows how much time I've spent in the midwest.

So that scene in "Silence of the Lambs" where the killer is working away in his "basement" where he has the girl trapped...that was actually his family room. Ok, got it.

are you kidding, nobody minds converting a basement to a family room/entertainment area. in fact, it's very disireable to have a finsished basement. it's not just the midwest, it's the east too.
